A “yo-vo” in Benin, West Africa

In Benin, we were most definitely aliens. There was no hiding the colour of our skin. The word for “stranger” in Fon, the traditional language there, is “yo-vo”. Whenever we walked down the street, we would hear countless people call out “yo-vo! Yo-vo!”.

Being Welcomed as Stranger

I like to think of my attempts at hospitality as experiments, as small attempts to make hospitality an important spiritual practice in my life.
