An Online Learning Community for those who care about the vibrancy of their communities

Welcome to Deepening Community, a Learning Community that connects individuals and organizations who are hosting community conversations to recapture the idea of community; designing programs to deepen our sense of belonging; and influencing policy to increase sustainability and local access to resources.

Imagine: city planners designing neighbourhoods to increase social capital; elderly people staying in their neighbourhoods for another 5 years; mental health rates declining because neighbours are caring for each other and creating a greater sense of connection and belonging together. Deepening Community is an Online Learning Community for individuals who care about the vibrancy of their communities.

As of August 2016, the Deepening Community Learning Community has 2,180 subscribers to its monthly e-newsletter Seeker's Journal and over 1,464 members.

Deepening Community brings together people with diverse experiences and understandings of community into a dialogue about the importance of having a deepened sense of community. This online community allows you to create a profile, listen to podcasts, post blogs and links to other websites and resources. Members are also the first people to know about our upcoming learning events, including single and multi-day workshops and webinars.  Our Learning Community also partner with seven Thought Leaders, who bring various insights and expertise into this overall dialogue.

Our vision for this Learning Community is to be a guiding force in bringing together citizens, organizations, and institutions to share stories, resources, experience, and envision policies that will support healthy, strong, and sustainable communities and neighbourhoods.

In his book, Deepening Community: Finding Joy in Chaotic Times, Paul Born draws on his experience as a community activist, writer, and teacher to distill the four pillars, or acts, that individually and especially together deepening our sense of community:

1. Sharing Our Story

2. Enjoying One Another by Spending Time Together

3. Caring for One Another

4. Working Together to Build A Better World

As such, our Learning Community is built around these four themes.  Discovering and sharing our stories, experiences, ideas, theories and practices around how we can find joy and work together to make our communities, neighbourhoods, and the thus the world, a better place.
