Defining Community

My perspective on what community is

Hi folks!

First of all I was thinking what is community, and how is it different than our environment? I thought some of you might have the same question so I will put my thoughts here.

How I see it, community is the interactions among living things, including people, animals, and plants, but does not include the non-living surroundings such as weather and topography, which is included in the definition of environment. I think community is one of those things that makes you feel at home in a place. For me, it's not just people that influence where I feel at home; if I had all my loved ones with me in the desert I would still not feel at home because home to me includes a variety of plants and animals from a temperate climate.

This feeling of home can change over time though, just like the sense of community. Home and your community change as we move to university, or immigrate, or when you get new neighbours, or different people join the clubs you are in. I think it is important to have a sense of community where you live since it gives you a sense of belonging, it usually includes like-minded people and plants and animals that you are familiar with. It's good for your emotional health.

Communities can be big or small or there can be multiple communities within communities, I don't think size is an important factor in defining a community. Considering the galaxy and beyond, we are all part of the same community on Earth. If anyone has any questions about my views on community, please ask away!
