Neighbour Challenge: Weeks 4 & 5

We're catching up here on the Neighbour Challenge from Abundant Community with both Weeks 4 and 5 to share with you this week. Did anyone else find the Week 3 challenge difficult? I know I spent a lot of time thinking about the challenge that asked us to list three things we know about, three things we can do with our hands and three things we are passionate/care about. What does this have to do with connecting with our neighbours, I wondered, when I first read the post. I wasn't even sure if I could actually share those things in this public forum - I can be a little bit shy about putting myself out there like that! But, I eventually realized, this has everything to do with neighbours and connecting with those who live so close by. Why wouldn't I share that I'm pretty great on a sewing machine or that I can whip up a super delicious chocolate cake made without dairy, eggs or wheat for my food-allergic child? Wouldn't it be nice for someone in my neighbourhood to know these things about me - that if they suddenly found themselves with a child who was newly diagnosed with food allergies, that they could call on me to help them through that difficult process? For my family, as we continue on our learning path towards growing more of our own food, perhaps one of our neighbours could have helped us figure out why our tomatoes were rotting on the bottom, or what we could do about our cucumber beetle infestation. Google gave us the answers to these problems because I honestly don't know if there was anyone close by to help since we don't talk. That's about to change!

Here are the next two challenges:

Week 4: Do you know your neighbours by their deficiencies or their gifts?

Challenge: Talk to one neighbour about what they know about, what they can do, and/or what they care about.

Week 5: What 'walls' have you put up that keep you from having conversations with your neighbours?

Challenge: Topple that wall by choosing one activity that will get you out and about in your neighbourhood.
